Coasting...like the old days

JimRoss's picture

Lo the last many years on my mountain bike I have been pedaling down hill as hard as I pedal up, straining to get to that new top speed personal best.  Wow it is fun---to a point.

Alas, I have been blinded by the light or in this case the LCD screen on on cycling computer---urging me to new heights.  Faster, faster faster.  Behold, I have discovered a joy remembered: COASTING!

When I was a kid-on-a-10-speed, without a speedo, the top of the hill was a place to celebrate and downhill a place to recover and bask in the wind of riding.  Ya know I checked and downhill pedaling is about a 10% gain...so not worth the sweat.

So a metaphor for life: coast when you can because you earned the opportunity by efforting to get to the top of the hill.

Enjoy the breeze on your face and wind in your hair.  Coast.

Smiles,  Jim
